Holwell Women's Institute
In 1897 Adelaide Hoodless established the first Women's Institute at Stoney Creek, Ontario, Canada to improve the lives of rural women through education and friendship. News of its success spread and WIs sprang up in the UK from 1915 onwards.
Mrs B Warry founded Holwell WI in 1927 and ninety years later, it is still thriving. Since 1937 we have been linked to Coldstream WI in British Columbia who correspond with us each month.
Meetings are held in Holwell Village Hall from 2.00pm to 4.30pm on the first Friday of each month except August when we have a Summer outing.
Our meetings begin with a business section. Our President and Secretary give reports on meetings held and forthcoming activities, social, adventurous and educational to which we are invited. The Treasurer gives a financial report and then our invited speaker takes the floor to educate and fascinate. At the end we enjoy a social time with tea and home-made cake.
Membership will cost £39.00 to join and we get a "WI Life" magazine through the post each month. Subscriptions finance three tiers: the Local Institute; County Federation and National Federation. Our share pays for hiring the Hall and the speakers we engage to talk to us. We top up our income with a Bring and Buy Table and Coffee Mornings
Why don't you join us for fun and friendship? You'll meet many inspirational women and so much more!
